Ordinary Time 1-17

Alternate antiphons for Gospel canticles

The following antiphons for the Canticle of Zechariah at Lauds (Morning Prayer) and the Canticle of Mary at Vespers (Evening Prayer) are offered as alternatives until the new English translation is ready. The ones below are translated from the Latin breviary available at iBreviary.org, except for some obvious mistakes they have (typically First Vespers), where we adapt the Italian breviary. We have tried to approximate the official US bishops translation.

Not all antiphons for all years are currently available; updates will come occasionally.

Sunday II

First Vespers (Evening Prayer I)

A Two of John’s disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus, saying, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.”

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

A This was the testimony John gave: A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

A The Spirit came down like a dove from heaven, and remained upon Jesus: he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.

Sunday III

First Vespers (Evening Prayer I)

A Repent, says the Lord, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

A As he was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, casting a net into the sea, and he called them. At once they left their nets and followed him.

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

Sunday IV

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

A Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God, says the Lord.

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

A Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God, says the Lord.

Sunday V

First Vespers (Evening Prayer I)

A You, my disciples, are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

A You are the light of the world: your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

A Your light must shine as a candle placed in its holder, so that it might illuminate all in the house.

Sunday VI

First Vespers (Evening Prayer I)

A Whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

A Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

A If you bring your gift to the altar, and there you recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Sunday VII

First Vespers (Evening Prayer I)

A Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be true children of your heavenly Father.

Lauds (Morning Prayer)

Second Vespers (Evening Prayer II)

A Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect, says the Lord.

Sunday VIII
